Our Bed & Breakfast is located in Aalst, province Gelderland, on the island of Bommelerwaard, which is surrounded by the river Maas and Waal. The island and its surroundings are steeped in history. There are plenty of nice museums, characteristic fortified towns, historic castles and beautiful national parks in the vicinity. Forts and Medieval castles
Loevestein Castle
A castle with a rich history. The escape of Hugo de Groot in a bookcase is undoubtedly the most famous of these. Castle Loevenstein offers a complete day out for young and old. For years in a row, the castle has been awarded the Kidsproof Museum title, a public prize chosen by children. A romantic trip for two, but also very suitable to visit with the whole family.

Castle Brakel
A medieval castle ruin located in a beautiful setting. The visible remains of the castle, including two corner towers, date from the 15th century. A nice outing with a beautiful walking route over the Brakel estate.

City castle Zaltbommel
A nice museum about the history of Zaltbommel and the Bommelerwaard. The museum is located in a 16th century listed building with turrets and battlements. This is why the building is also called the city castle of Zaltbommel.

Fort Giessen
This fort is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterline and has an interesting history. It is located in a beautiful location with a nice walking route. The fort is open to the public from May to September on the last Saturday of the month between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

Fort Altena
A 19th century fortress which has been nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List. The fortress served, among other things, as an internment camp after WWII. You will also find traces of secret activities that took place here after 1994. An exciting outing with beautiful nature and a nice restaurant.

Ammersoyen Castle
Ammersoyen Castle is one of the best preserved medieval castles in the Netherlands. It is a typical Dutch moated castle with four corner towers, an outer castle and a moat. The interior has a medieval look with a knights' hall, weapons and finds from the moat. Worth a visit if you want to get a good idea of life on a castle in the Middle Ages.

Characteristic fortified towns
Zaltbommel
Zaltbommel is a typical fortified town. The old part is surrounded by fortifications with a wide, tree-lined belt and wide canals as protection. Nowadays you can stroll along the ramparts and the fortifications. Also take a look at the Old Water Gate, the only preserved gate of the fortified city, and city castle Zaltbommel. Besides the fact that the city castle is a real eye-catcher from the outside, the museum shows an interesting collection about Zaltbommel during the Eighty Years' War.

Woudrichem
The old part of Woudrichem with its fortifications is a place of interest as a whole. Some of the most important monuments are the Gothic St. Martin's Church, the Prison Gate from 1580, the scaffolding mill Nooit Gedagt and the Old Town Hall. Furthermore you have a wide choice of atmospheric restaurants, cafes and lunch spots. Perfect for a nice city walk with a delicious lunch or dinner.

Ravenstein
A small but beautiful fortified town with many authentic buildings. Walk or cycle through the historic center and feast your eyes on the many sights. Churches, a reconstructed Latin school, fortress walls, there is plenty to discover! You can relax on one of the cozy terraces.

Grave
This town has been besieged no less than seven times. So there is a lot of history to discover. You will also find the Hampoort here. A gate from the year 1688. The gate is in the top 100 UNESCO World Heritage in the Netherlands. Well worth a visit!

Heusden
Heusden has been completely destroyed several times. The Spaniards in the Eighty Years' War, a big fire, a lightning strike in the powder tower and bombardments during the Second World War are some of the causes. Since then the fortified city has been completely restored and won the Urbes Nostrae prize. Gorinchem
Gorinchem, pronounced Gorkum, is the largest intact fortress of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Did you know that the defence line is the largest national monument in the Netherlands and has been nominated as a UNESCO world heritage site? Take a nice city walk here or walk around the ramparts with beautiful views over the rivers. You'll also find all kinds of special stores and galleries here. Everything for a day filled with culture.

National Parks
National Park De Biesbosch
This protected nature reserve is the largest freshwater tidal area in Europe. You will find many willow tidal forests and creeks here. A wonderful place to have a romantic picnic along the water, on foot or by bike to enjoy nature. You can also explore the area from the water with a boat trip. If you want to enjoy this area sportily, you can rent a canoe. There are several routes to follow for both beginners and experienced canoeists that can last from two hours to a whole day. This is guaranteed to be an adventure.

National Park de Loonse en Drunense Duinen
A National Park which largely consists of dry sand drifts and coniferous forests. It is also called the 'Brabant Sahara'. It is a beautiful area for day recreation. You can hike and cycle on trails that run through the whole area, but you can also choose an even more adventurous mountain bike route. So don't forget to bring the bikes, or rent them near the area.

De Neswaarden
Recreation nearby is less than a five minute walk from our Bed & Breakfast in nature reserve De Neswaarden. Here you can enjoy the summer and swim on the beach, or sunbathe and picnic in the sunbathing lawn. With an ice cream parlor within walking distance and a large, fenced off playground for children, this is a perfect getaway for the whole family.

De Lieskampen
The Lieskampen is a beautiful nature reserve for walking or cycling. The area consists of bowl soils and has a rich vegetation and special flora including orchids. It is half accessible with paths for cyclists, hikers and horse riders. In addition, the nature reserve contains a fishing pond. The Lieskampen is easy to cycle from the vacation home.
